This assignment will require you to:
 write a justification of the primary school breakfast program in Australian primary schools
 visit a primary school breakfast program
 write a reflection incorporating your observations linked to unit syllabus topics

Unit Learning Outcomes:
This assessment will help you achieve the unit learning outcomes:
1. Examine the issues and challenges for public health nutrition as a discipline
3. Evaluate effective public health nutrition programs and strategies situationed in an ecological framework.

1. Arrange to visit a school breakfast program (you may visit in pairs if you wish, but you need to write
individual assignments)
a. Sign up to a visit time provided in Bb. These have been arranged on your behalf, please read the
visit instructions in Bb and do not contact these schools directly; send your queries to Gemma.

b. check the list of other interested schools with a breakfast program in Blackboard. This list identifies schools that may be willing to have student volunteers visit their program.
i. Telephone the coordinator and organise a date and time for your visit: say you a Curtin student studying a health sciences course (nutrition/health promotion/health sciences/other) and want to volunteer in their school breakfast program in the next week or two. If they say NO ‐ say thank you and move onto the next on the list.

2. Complete insurance fieldwork requirements; including your Working with Children Check, Insurance
declaration and risk assessment form (see information in Blackboard).

3. On the day of the visit

a. Follow the dress code (see information in Blackboard)
b. Take your WWCC card or receipt
c. Take the checklist form to your visit (see Blackboard)
d. Help out with the program – chat to the students, make toast, do dishes – whatever is required.

4. Complete the checklist form with your observations about the types of food available and what you did during your visit as soon as possible AFTER your visit (same day preferably).

5. In written assignment form answer the following:
(i) Write a Justification (aka Rationale) for why it is necessary in Australia to have a program that provides
breakfast at school to primary school children.
(ii) Reflect on how what you have observed at the School Breakfast program links with what you have
learnt about the food and nutrient recommendations for primary school children and the role of
schools as a setting for public health nutrition programs.

Tips to answer question (i)

 Word count for question (i) = 700 words (+/‐ 10%)

 This question requires you to provide an evidence‐based discussion. Some questions to consider in your
answer: Why are primary school aged children a vulnerable group nutritionally? What is the importance
of breakfast to primary school aged children? Do all Australian primary school aged children have
breakfast at home? Why are primary schools a good setting to provide this program? Statistics will add
substantiation to this section, and citations are critical for credibility and academic integrity.

 Write in 3rd person and in past tense.

 Cite and reference at least 4 credible, relevant resources; preferably peer reviewed journal articles or
Australian government or industry reports. No websites should be used except the Australian Bureau of
Statistics Website, and that of community programs where publications are not available. You will lose
marks if the resources you use are not sufficient, too old, not relevant or not credible. Ideally you should
be using Australian resources.

Tips to answer question (ii)

 Word count for question (ii) = 700 words (+/‐ 10%)
 This question asks you to reflect on how what you have experienced in the ‘real world’ compares with
what you have learnt from your lectures, tutorials and textbooks.
 Some questions to consider as you write your answer: What did you learn from visiting the school
breakfast program? How has this visit influenced your knowledge of what children eat and of public
health nutrition practice in school settings? Was it what you expected, considering what you have learnt
about food and nutrient recommendations and the role of schools as a setting for PHN programs?
 Write in first person, ie you can use the personal pronoun “I” for this question only. Please do not use
“you” or “your” as it is vague and makes it unclear to whom you refer.
 Do not just describe what you did , “I went x, then I saw y, and I did z”. This is description rather than
reflection and you will lose marks if you do this.
 Be careful not to judge, there are many reasons why children do not have breakfast at home (think about
the socio‐ecological framework), please do not imply this is due to bad parenting.
 Use the visit checklist to remind you of the types of foods provided and your readings, tutorial and
lecture notes to link these to food groups and nutrients.
 No resources or citations are required for this question as it is a reflection of your experience and

5. Apply Academic Integrity skills that you learnt in Foundations for Professional Health Practice to locate
credible resources, and then cite, reference and format them appropriately
a. In your submission include a cover page (including student declaration), a contents page, the checklist,
the justification and reflection, and references.
b. No separate introduction or conclusion is required.
c. Submit this assignment as one document and Use the Curtin Health Academic Study guide (CHAS) for
guidance on how to format your assignment. Please include an accurate word count at the end of each
question, and all other formatting requirements that you have demonstrated in first year, such as
correct page numbering, line spacing, numbered headings etc.
d. Marks will be lost if you write under or over the word count for either question. There is 10% (or 70
word) leeway. The word count does include citations but not the reference list.
e. Ensure you cite all resources and include a reference page at the end (using APA 6th style).
f. Remember: all information in the justification must be cited and referenced otherwise you will
potentially be referred for plagiarism and action will be taken. Before you submit your assessment ask
the following: Have I provided evidence for every piece of information? Even information I know? Does
every piece of information in the justification clearly have a citation linked to it? Do my citations and
reference list match?
g. One citation in a paragraph is not enough. You can ‘book‐end’ with citations and use linking phrases if
the author has contributed more than one idea, but this should be done in such a way that it is clear
where every piece of information comes from.
h. Use Turnitin to check for any inadvertent text matching by submitting drafts and using the feedback.
i. Submit your assessment to Blackboard by the due date and time. Late penalties will apply unless an
extension has been granted by the unit coordinator.
j. See the rubric provided in Blackboard for marking and feedback criteria. Use the rubric to check you
have met all the requirements for this assignment.
