Essay – Examining ‘Food’ and ‘Democracy

This is an essay in which you will critically analyse the nature of ‘food’ and also ‘democracy’ by comparing one example from each of the two food systems:

(i) The Industrial Food system example  ie a supermarket, and

(ii) The Alternative Food system example ie you choose ONE example of food democracy in practice at individual or community level.

  • This could be growing food at home, farmer’s markets, backyard food swaps, community gardensThe essay task

As part of your written essay, you should ensure that you cover the following :

  • What do you notice about the fundamentals of ‘democracy’ in both examples (supermarket + the one you chose)?
  • Compare and contrast each example: What do you notice in each site?
  • What stands out in terms of “food” in each example?
  • What stands out in terms of “democracy” and it’s principles in each example?
  • Use food democracy as a lens to examine how consumers are given choice or invited to participate (or not, as the case may be) in each example

    • Structure the body of your essay as logical and sequential paragraphs – each paragraph should contain a point in your argument.
